Abstract:

The talk will focus on several examples of the application of optical diagnostics to aerodynamic and plasma flows. The first part will present an overview of plasma aerodynamic studies at Ohio State University with emphasis on flow control, and Plasma Assisted Combustion, utilizing non-equilibrium high repetition rate (up to 100 kHz), high voltage (~20 kV) - short duration (10-25 nsec), repetitively pulsed discharges.

The second part of the talk will describe recent advances in ultra high (up to one MHz) frame rate imaging, including the development of MHz frame rate Planar Doppler Velocimetry, NO2 Molecular Tagging Velocimetry, and OH and NO Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence imaging. Recent studies of transition and turbulence in the NASA-Langley 31” Mach 10 Hypersonic Wind Tunnel and the CUBRC 48” Mach 7 Shock tunnel will be presented, as well as recent 10 kHz Rayleigh/Raman mixing studies in a laboratory turbulent flame.

About the speaker

Dr. Walter Lempert, a world leader of Aerodynamic Measurement Technology, is a Professor with joint appointment in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry at The Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Utah in 1981. After spending two years as a National Research Council Post-doctoral Fellow at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg , Maryland , he joined the Optical Spectroscopy Section of the NASA-Langley Research Center . From 1988 to 1997 he was a member of the professional research staff at Princeton University . Current research interests center on the development and application of optical diagnostics for probing fundamental fluid and plasma phenomena. He is the author of ~200 journal and conference publications, and recently served as the Chair of the AIAA Aerodynamic Measurement Technology Technical Committee.
